In 1984, International Medical Corps launched its first humanitarian assistance program, anchored in an idea novel for its time: recruit local residents from the remote villages of war-torn Afghanistan, train them as paramedics, then support their return home with medicines and other supplies needed to provide basic healthcare for people in their communities.
