About World Refugee Day
More than 114 million people—a number equal to more than 1/3 of the entire population of the United States—are displaced right now. That’s the highest number in human history.
It’s a hard number to imagine. But behind that unimaginable number are more than 114 million individual people—mothers, fathers, grandparents, sisters, brothers and children—who faced a life-or-death circumstance and were forced to leave their homes to survive.
Internally displaced people (or “IDPs”) take up residence inside their country—in shelters, camps, homes of family or friends or other accommodations they can find. Others leave behind their countries altogether—often with only what they can carry in their arms and on their backs—to seek refuge in new countries where they may not know anyone, may not speak the language and often lack citizenship to get jobs and start over.
Most refugees want the same things most everyone wants—safety for their families and a future for their children. Thank you for sharing their stories.
