Lt. Governor to Climb Mt. Kilimanjaro in Support of International Medical Corps Humanitarian Relief Efforts

Kansas Lt. Governor Jeff Colyer, M.D. is climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,341 feet), the highest mountain in Africa, with his daughter Alexandra, as part of fundraising efforts to support International Medical Corps’ humanitarian work worldwide.

Dr. Colyer has been long-time volunteer with International Medical Corps, and has served numerous emergency response missions for the organization, including in Rwanda, Bosnia, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, and Iraq.

“I’m so thankful for the work that International Medical Corps has done to bring hope to some very dark places in the world. It’s my hope that Alexandra and I can raise awareness for these important issues by climbing these mountains,” said Dr. Colyer.

The climb will take place after Dr. Colyer completes medical work on behalf of International Medical Corps at an undisclosed location in Africa. After their return, he and his daughter will continue their campaign for International Medical Corps by climbing the highest mountain in their home state of Kansas, Mt. Sunflower (4,039 feet).

“We are deeply grateful to Dr. Colyer for his compassion and decades-long dedication to helping the world’s most vulnerable people,” said Nancy Aossey, President & CEO of International Medical Corps. “His and his daughter’s heroic efforts in climbing these mountains will go a long way to raising awareness and funds and help us carry out our lifesaving work around the world.”

As a leading first-responder, International Medical Corps is currently operating in 28 countries, providing relief and training programs to devastated communities in places like Darfur, Haiti, Afghanistan and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
