Snapshots May 2021

From India to Somalia, see the impact you’ve had as a supporter of our work this month.

Responding to the COVID-19 Surge in India

India is currently fighting a wave of COVID-19 that is sickening hundreds of thousands — and killing thousands — every day.

We’re continuing to work with local partners to provide critical care at overwhelmed healthcare facilities and COVID-19 treatment centers throughout the country. We are working with our in-country partners to provide critical equipment such as oxygen generators, oxygen delivery and storage supplies, and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Supporting COVID-Vaccination Efforts in the US and Around the World

In South Los Angeles, we are supporting vaccination efforts at Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, where we’ve supplied two vans that the hospital is using in its mobile vaccination efforts. At Kedren Community Health Center, we are providing volunteer vaccinators to help the rollout of the vaccine in one of the hardest-hit areas of California.

In Florida, we are supporting vaccination efforts by PanCare Health, which serves low-income communities in the Panhandle region, by providing the cold-chain equipment so vital to storing and administering COVID-19 vaccines.

In Jordan, we are continuing to work with the Ministry of Health to provide vaccination services in Azraq and Zaatari refugee camps.

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, our team continues to support the rollout of vaccines to elderly and vulnerable residents, and raise awareness of the vaccine.

In addition to working with ministries of health in individual countries, we are offering assistance to COVAX — an international partnership that is supporting the research, development and manufacturing of a wide range of COVID-19 vaccines, and will distribute them to participating countries.

Celebrating Midwives and Nurses Worldwide

On May 5, we celebrated the men and women who play a key role in reducing maternal deaths worldwide. In Irbid, Jordan, our awesome team of doctors, midwives and nurses care for premature and critically ill newborn babies.

On May 12, we held a special celebration to thank nurses for their care, compassion and dedication to helping people in need.

Responding to the Tigray Crisis

More than six months have passed since armed conflict erupted in the Tigray region of Ethiopia, and the situation for those affected remains difficult as violence persists. The conflict has led to the mass displacement of more than 2 million people to date. We’re providing health and nutrition services, PPE and COVID-19 infection prevention and control training, hygiene supplies, and much more to those in Ethiopia and Sudan affected by the conflict.

Our team in Sudan has trained almost 40 local community leaders to identify COVID-19 symptoms and screen those who are symptomatic, and has set up 80 handwashing stations. They also are screening children for acute malnutrition.

In Ethiopia, we have mobile health teams in the town of Shire, where many displaced people have fled, that are providing outpatient consultations, nutrition services, antenatal consultations and health education.

Providing Emergency Medical Care and Support in Gaza

We’re responding to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, providing medical care and working with local partners to reach conflict-affected areas. Our teams are also now providing mental health services to affected communities.

Fighting Hunger in Somalia

Food prices are rising in Somalia due to a combination of COVID-19 restrictions, droughts, floods and locust invasions. We are providing health and nutrition assistance, as well as treatments for children who are suffering from malnutrition.

Highlighting the Work of Our Team in Yemen

People in Yemen are facing a brutal war in their country, as well as a deadly pandemic. We’re serving areas of the country with some of the most pressing humanitarian needs. For example, our amazing team recently delivered medical equipment and furniture to an orphanage in Sana’a city.
